The Uniform Plumbing Code is a set of MINIMUM standards set forth by building officials through out the nation to protect your health and safety. The P-trap is not there to trap your wedding ring when it falls down the drain but to prevent sewer gases from entering your home. Sewer gas doesn't just make you nauseous but can carry disease and even kill. The code also requires the trap to be a minimum of 17 gauge thick. This protects your pocket book by preventing inferior products being installed.
